Asparagus

Tues, April 28th, 2026

Dear Ole Tyme Customers:

Mexican asparagus supplies remain very limited as Sonora enters the final stretch of its season. Baja is just beginning to ramp up, but volumes will not be sufficient to support the Mother’s Day pull. As a result, overall supply remains extremely tight in the near term, with more meaningful availability not expected until Baja production strengthens in mid-May, followed by Central Mexico coming online in late May through June.

Domestic asparagus continues to be significantly delayed and remains the primary gap in relieving current supply shortages ahead of the Mother’s Day demand period. In Washington and Idaho, recent frost events (27–29°F) have pushed harvest back an additional 5–8 days, keeping West Coast supplies exceptionally tight during a period that typically sees an early to mid-April ramp-up. In the Midwest, Indiana production has been impacted by a recent freeze, while Michigan has just begun harvesting, with volumes expected to gradually build into early May and reach full production by the week of May 11. New Jersey is producing light volume but remains primarily focused on East Coast demand and is not expected to materially ease overall market pressure. Canadian production is anticipated to begin in limited quantities the week of May 4, providing some regional support but minimal overall relief in the short term.

Peruvian asparagus supplies remain stable overall, with production gradually transitioning from southern to northern growing regions as the south winds down. Northern production is expected to increase more noticeably into late June and July, though near-term gains remain limited. Air freight space has been constrained due to Mother’s Day flower shipments out of Ecuador, although some easing is expected soon. Quality has been mixed, with occasional issues such as wet tips and decay affecting marketability. Ocean freight volumes are slowly increasing week over week, but will only provide modest support in the near term.
