Dear Ole Tyme Customers:
Tomato supplies across the U.S. market have tightened sharply following prolonged sub‑freezing temperatures in Florida in late January, which triggered Force Majeure declarations and drastically reduced domestic production. Meaningful recovery is not anticipated until mid‑April or later, when new crops from regions such as Ruskin/Palmetto begin harvesting.
Compounding the issue, Mexican supply—normally a critical supplement—is lighter than seasonal norms due to previous weather‑related yield impacts. Additionally, recent violent unrest has strained logistics, slowing shipments and freight movement, though some stabilization is expected soon.
Rounds
- Extremely limited volume out of Florida until mid‑April.
- Mexico providing moderate but below‑normal yields with mixed quality.
- Strong demand is intensifying pressure, resulting in very tight supplies expected over the next six weeks.
Romas
- Florida supply severely impacted by freezes and contract Force Majeure activations.
- Mexican regions (e.g., Culiacán) facing high demand, lighter yields, and average quality, compounded by recent supply‑chain disruptions.
- Romas are tighter than rounds; substituting with rounds may be necessary to cover orders.
Grape & Cherry Tomatoes
- Florida production remains low following freeze damage.
- Mexico reporting moderate yields but continued quality challenges from prior weather events, coupled with increasing demand.
