Dear Ole Tyme Customers:
- The Winter carrot season in the Imperial Valley is entering its final couple of weeks, with transition to the Bakersfield spring crop scheduled to begin next week in a light way.
- Carrot sizing is currently running smaller than expected, resulting in limited availability of Jumbo carrots as the season winds down and new harvests begin.
- The Jumbo carrot market remains elevated, with continued tight supplies on Jumbos, Sticks, and Chips due to ongoing sizing challenges.
- Recent weather impacts earlier this year significantly affected the Bakersfield fall crop, requiring growers to extend the Imperial Valley desert season longer than originally planned.
- Spring plantings in Bakersfield were delayed by more than a month due to field conditions and unfavorable weather following winter storms.
- Growers are intentionally avoiding an early start to the Bakersfield spring crop in an effort to prevent supply disruptions from continuing from one season into the next.
- Field conditions in Bakersfield continue to improve each week, and growers are reporting stronger baby peeled carrot yields as plant health gradually improves.
- As Bakersfield production ramps up over the coming weeks, supplies are expected to improve throughout June, helping bring more consistent week-to-week availability.
- By July, growers are hopeful they will be back to supporting normal customer demand levels, with the potential for additional volume availability if needed.
- Weather in Kern County is expected to remain warm and favorable over the next 10 days, with sunny skies and temperatures reaching the upper 80s and low 90s — ideal conditions for crop development.
