Dear Ole Tyme Customers:
The entire cantaloupe industry is experiencing a significant production shortfall resulting in a supply gap.
Unseasonably warm temperatures during February and March prevented the normal winter reduction of whitefly populations in the Yuma growing region. The warm weather also accelerated crop development, causing early fields to begin harvesting approximately two weeks ahead of schedule.
Elevated whitefly populations spread virus throughout later-planted fields, leading to widespread crop stress and failure. As a result, late-season fields are collapsing approximately two weeks earlier than expected, significantly reducing harvestable volume.
No meaningful harvests are expected during the weeks of June 15 and June 22, creating a temporary production gap until California production begins in late June.
Honeydews will be affected as well, but Mexican product is available and will help fill the gap over the next two to three weeks.
Orders will be prorated, and different sizes may be substituted to send as much product as possible.
If you have any questions, please reach out to your Sales Representative.
Thanks,
Ole Tyme Produce
